Resources

So where do you go from here? Well, you could visit the rest of this website. Over the next several weeks (and months), I will add additional design related topics. However, if you don't have the patience to wait, I recommend the following websites and books.

Books

The PC is not a typewriter
by Robin Williams
This book is a must-read. A slim non-nonsense book, it gets right to the point and explains how to make your documents look signficantly better with very little work. At $10 US the price is unbeatable. Even if you decide never to buy any other design book, buy this one. It is an indispensable guide.

The Non-Designer’s Design book
by Robin Williams
Highly recommended for anyone creating posters, banners or any kind of printed material. At $11, it’s cheap.

The Non-Designer’s Type Book
by Robin Williams
Goes into a lot more detail on creating professional looking type. The only problem with Robin Williams is her tendency to call her readers wimps and dorks. It gets particularly irritating in this book. If you can look past that rather glaring fault (a black marker comes in real handy.), this and the other Non-Designer’s books are quite useful.

The Non-Designer’s Web book
by Robin Williams
I have only skimmed through this one, but from what I saw I like it.

Robin Williams Design Workshop
by Robin Williams
Great little book of design tips. Skip over the web examples though, the designs look a little dated.

Non-Designers Scan and Print Book If you ever find yourself in the unenviable position of having to send artwork to a professional printer, this book is a must-have. It gets straight to the point in explaining print terminology such as DPI, EPS, spreads, etc. Also includes an excellent section on scanning documents.
